Perhaps a somewhat charged subject for a Friday evening, but perfectly suited to the somewhat timid, tired, flattened feeling after an intense week. The week itself was fun and diverse, that’s for sure. But somewhere on this Friday, an expectation arose in my mind that I couldn’t fulfill. I can’t put a finger on it.

The origin of the question is in the news: a report about industrial espionage by Chinese employees of ASML. The moment has been seized to react fiercely to this by Dutch politicians. Due to some context, in this case the doubt about the intentions of another Chinese target, Huawei. These two things are connected, but that they are directly related is more up to the ear than the narrator.

Why should I care about this? Do I just want to say something about it? Do I have useful knowledge I can share here? In my previous position as a technology advisor at the consulate in Shanghai, risks and concerns were expressed, often from the gut, without a solid foundation. On the other hand, things that actually happened (such as corporate espionage by Chinese employees of other Dutch high-tech companies) did not necessarily reach us. Or, me, I should say.

Perhaps now, after 2 years, the powerlessness of my position there is becoming more clear. Of course, the Chinese only shared what they wanted. The Dutch sector did not want the prying eyes of their government. I myself was soft as pudding.

Written on April 12, 2019

I struggle with the thought: what is hypocrisy?
