Almost every day I race to Suzhou to spend a few hours staring at dividing cells, and in the evenings I am claimed by a pro forma administration, an attempt to write a patent, a non-existent collaboration with RIVM and a Chinese partner, scholarship applications, residence documents, emails, scripts, and if there is time left, an attempt at market research.

Last week I also had to go to Hong Kong, where I spent about 6000 RMB in 3 days (and 3 working days!) for a visa that will soon have to be converted into a residence document / work permit in Hangzhou.

Yesterday I thought for a moment: what a lot of effort. And for what? Will this ever lead to anything? Does it ever make money? Can I ever reach my goal?

In the evening I come home and after dinner Emme plays her cello as usual. Beautiful as always. She practices hard and plays Dvorak’s Humoresque. But as always, I am also strict, and exaggerating, full of self-conviction. Until tears appear. “Every day 50 minutes,” says Emme. “Why?”

I can explain it to her in detail. I don’t know if it convinces.

Written on March 26, 2019

Double standards.
